Annual Competitions
Please see listed below in broadly the chronological order of each Captain's year some of the key competitions available to all members.
Entry fees are usually £5.00 per person. possibly more for Charity events. The entry fee for Captain's Day is published annually with the schedule for the day. See also below details of the entry fee for Sally's Day (formerly Christmas "Turkey Drive").
Captain’s Drive In
This is a shotgun start and takes place in early October. The traditional ‘putting out’ for the outgoing Captain and ‘drive-in’ for the incoming Captain takes place before the competition gets under way. It is always good to have a crowd by the 18th green/1st tee before the real business starts.
Prize-giving takes place after the round in the clubhouse, members are encouraged to stay for this. In addition there is also a meal to mark the incoming Captain’s year of office.
SAGS ‘Pink Day’.
This is a fundraiser for Breast Cancer. Usually played at the end of August/start of September.
SAGS is a Golf Society and they sponsor this medal competition. It involves playing the course in a different order.
Entry fee is £5 and everyone is expected to wear a visible item of pink golf clothing. It is common practice for those who do not wear pink to incur a fine (which goes to the charity). Be prepared.
Sally's Day (Turkey Drive.)
A stableford competition played in early December. This is an 08.00 shotgun start with prize-giving taking place immediately after the round in the clubhouse.
In place of the normal entry fee all players must bring an [unwrapped] prize/gift to a minimum value of £10, which will be added to the prize table.
The top ten (approx.) scores receive a voucher, partially sponsored by the ‘Committee’, with the remainder choosing a prize from the table in order highest to lowest.
Dale Rayner Pairs.
This is a combined medal pairs competition . Usually played in September each year.
Basildon Cup.
This is a fundraiser for the Junior golf section.
Entry fee £5.
Guest Day
This event is organised by the club Captain and monies raised go to the Captain’s Charity
Captain's Day
This is a really great day for all club members to get involved. It is a 18 hole competition with all sections able to take part. Prizes are awarded in many different categories with the captain deciding exactly what nearer the time. See notice boards in the clubhouse.
There will be an evening event and this usually takes the form of a meal/barbeque with live music and/or DJ. This event has been ‘themed’ in the past. It makes a really good evening if members can put this date in their diaries and make the effort to support their Captain.
Club Championship
This is a 36-hole medal competition designed to determine the best golfer at the club. However, there are also prizes for different handicap categories, net and gross scores. In addition to this there is also an 18-hole competition for those that prefer not to play 36.
Those who are at the top of the leaderboard at lunchtime will go out in reverse order.
We like to encourage the members who have played 36 holes to see the final groups in and congratulate the winner, whoever it might be!
Summer Pairs/Singles and Winter League.
Details of these competitions are usually notified in March/April and September.
Please remember that entry fees for these competitions are payable in advance and members will not be able to compete until the fees have been paid.
Please note that:-
In addition to the above competitions there are a variety of other special events that take place during the year:-
· Matches within the club involving the different sections
· Sponsored competitions
· Shot-gun starts for prize-giving.
· Captains' Ball
· Christmas Draw night (usually December)
· AGM (usually late September, early October).
Please do check the Men’s website, BRS and notices in the Clubhouse regularly to ensure you are all abreast of upcoming events. Most importantly please do try and support your club, your Captain and the charities we are involved with.
Many thanks
